| These aren't the songs I fell in love with!!Initially I was very happy with this purchase, as it's got almost all of the Bee Gees songs I was looking for. But then, I started to listen, and...
These songs do NOT sound the same, and the change is NOT for the better!!
- "I've Gotta Get A Message to You" - I have an MP3 of this from a different album. The difference is shocking within the first five seconds of both songs - for example, there's a chord that's played with a violin crescendo on the other version I have, virtually replaced here by what sounds like a clang from an untuned guitar. I flipped back and forth between them to compare: this album's version is a slightly different pitch and sounds less soulful, less complex, less warm, less rich, less moving.
- Ditto for "Emotion" - this is not the version with Samantha Sang. Now, that was understandable if this compilation's focus is the Bee Gees and not artists that sang with them, because they do a pretty darn good job of covering their own songs. (I've heard demo versions of songs like "Guilty" and "Heartbreaker" with Barry's falsetto in lieu of female vocals - it's admittedly a bit disconcerting at first, but his passion and vocal prowess are impressive enough, IMHO, to overcome most objections.)
*BUT*, I bought this album thinking I'd be getting the original song. In addition, the music itself sounds different as well -- once again, less moving, as though various subtle sounds have been changed or removed.
...and I could go on; even though I don't have the time or the heart to compare all 40 songs (except for the handful of live performance recordings) to other versions, I can hear and more importantly *feel* the difference between this and the music that moved me. I see there are a number of people who feel it's a crisper/clearer sound, and as someone else mentioned the changes might not even be noticeable to most people. But if you're as nitpicky -- ahem, I mean as "hyper-aware" as I am when it comes to music, I would strongly suggest comparing the samples of this and other albums before you purchase.

Indigo- a birthday gift that I loveI was ske-ptical at first but then it won me over as something worthwhile. Despite some initial fidgeting on the part of me , the first time I listened to it, I soon after settled down and became engrossed and involved. A couple of times, I almost fell asleep. Although I have only had the CD's for a few months now, they have already become a part of the pre-monday morning rush routine. I recently received this as a gift to use with my 11 and 12 year old sons. This cd is really beautiful; filled with positive, uplifting, and empowering stories presented in soothing, steady tones. The pace of the speaking and spacing of the stories is slow and deliberate, achieving the goal of peaceful relaxation. The CD's are passively interactive...breathing, stretching, relaxing and absorbing the message. These CD's facilitate learning very important techniques for self-regulation and control and I highly recommend them to all families.

| About as good as "Goth" can getIf there was ever a pretentious sub-genre of pop-rock, it was "Goth." At least "punk" knew what it was rebelling against, even if it had no reason to rebel; "Goth," on the other hand, is totally misnamed and has no idea what it wants to be. Amy Lee's band, however, is not truly "Goth," although she certainly revels in the "Goth" motifs to create something rather new and different.
That is the true interest of "Fallen": it is really something different from standard rock- or pop-fare. The lyrics are highly thoughtful, smacking of depression and self-induced anguish and all the same a consciousness that something perhaps more beautiful lies above. Notwithstanding Amy Lee's vehement insistence that she had never wanted this to be a "Christian band" (which, given the connotations therein, is totally understandable even to this practising Christian) this is quite possibly the story of a soul yearning for salvation.
Of course it is not "sacred music" and it would be totally unacceptable for a contemporary Christian label (the music under which, by the way, is most definitely not "sacred," either, despite its pretensions to the contrary). That is something else that makes this disc unique: its expression of the anguish and frustrations of ordinary life against the promise of higher things.
Interestingly, the album's flatness, from a musical standpoint, is also revealing of just how shallow and pointless are personal anguishes against the backdrop of sacred majesty. Musically, the disc is at its best when it borrows from classical or medieval motifs--a polyphonic choir can be heard singing "Servatis a periculo; servatis a malefico" (Thou savest from danger; thou savest from evil) on "Whisper"--as a nod to its "goth" aesthetic or to Lee's classical music training and when Lee's lyrics turn away from inner struggle and onto outward universal contemplations: "Will I be denied Christ?" she asks in "Tourniquet," meaning, of course, will she go to hell if she commits suicide. "Hello?" is also good, as it keeps itself simple and personal without trying to stand up to great classics.
That this is a musically anemic piece of work should not surprise. Musical anemia is an endemic fault in all rock groups, owing to the limited number of voices and limited singing range of those who do sing as well as the relatively few instruments and band members. However, next to the classical motifs and the longing for medieval and baroque Christianity evinced in these tracks, the shallowness of the genre is all the more evident. This is true of the lyrics as well: the personal and temporal can never compare to the Divine and the eternal. Amy Lee may have good taste, but so long as she is playing in the popular/rock genre her good taste will expose the inherent flaws of the genre and make her music look underdeveloped in comparison. And that is why I docked two stars.
"Fallen" is worth a listen or two and (for a layman who does not hear confessions) is a good psychological case study of a tormented soul, but if you are looking for rich, deep music, check out Vivaldi: The Four Seasons; if it's Christian music you are after, check out Missa Praeter Rerum Seriem.
