charger worksI ordered the DeWalt DC9310 drill battery charger from Amazon.com. It was delivered quickly (within a few days), but as others have experiencing, the packaging is a bit to be desired (it's from a third-party seller). The charger was unsealed, wrapped in paper, with no instructions. It does look brand-new though. Off to a rocky start...but it gets much better!
I Googled the make & model number and easily found and printed off the instructions - not a big deal. After reading through them, I tried the charger out.
I have a Black & Decker cordless drill that runs on a 9.6V PS120 power pack (not exactly a "major league" drill but it gets the job done for me!). Many reviewers said that the DeWalt charger works just find with B&D batteries, and I can confirm that! The fit of the battery into the charger is a bit tight, so it's a bit difficult getting the battery in and out of the charger - but it does work rather nicely.
I went from a completely dead battery to a full-charged battery in just under 30 minutes! There's a tune-up function on the charger if you leave it plugged in (for 8 hours) which I might try sometime, but for now I tried out my fully-charged battery and it works great with the drill! The cheap charger that came with the B&D drill used to take 16 HOURS and you had to be "on the ball" to unplug it for fear of overcharging. Not with this DeWalt - it charges up quickly and won't overcharge, and will tune up the battery as well (I can attest only to the quick charge so far but I must say I am very impressed!).
Kudos to DeWalt and to Amazon for making this one facet of life all that much easier! Despite the questionable packaging and tight fit I'm so pleased with the overall functionality of this charger that I'm giving this review all 5 stars! I'm a very satisfied customer. Read more...

| Firestorm PS145 Type 3 18V Battery owners BEWAREThe charger works great and the seller I got it from shipped it on time. However, this review is for anyone that owns a Firestorm PS145 18V battery. Just beware.
I bought this charger and said battery (http://www.amazon.com/Black-Decker-PS145-18-Volt-Battery/dp/B0000302V2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1281753974&sr=8-1) for my father who recently told me that his Firestorm battery and charger were fried (though it had been busted for a few years but I was not home at the time as I was stationed in Japan). All items arrived promptly and in great shape. However, the PS145 battery DOES NOT fit into the charger (more on this in a bit). Prior to buying this charger and battery I went through almost every single review I could find (I originally started from the PS180 charger page that led me to this charger) and nothing suggested that this battery would not work with this charger so I was in for a surprise.
At first I thought maybe one of the items I ordered may have been dead on arrival so I had my brother bring in his 18V Dewalt battery to check the new charger. Charger lit up so I knew it was working fine. However, since he only uses Dewalt and we only have this one B&D battery, I had to find a way to make sure the battery wasn't faulty. So I grabbed some copper wire, stripped the tips and basically just made an extension to connect to the battery and the charger lit up. So now I know both items are working fine. I compared the Dewalt and B&D battery and it was almost the same. (BTW, the 18v Dewalt battery works in the Firestorm drill; it just won't latch) The only difference being the notch at the stem/post of the battery. The Dewalt was centered but the B&D was off to the side. And making sure that the notch was not actually needed, I sawed it off. Now it fit a lot better but it still won't charge. Just so happens that my brother has a spare DW9116 charger that he isn't using but here's the thing. I put the B&D battery in it and it actually charges. However, I put it into the exact same charger that I just bought, it doesn't. The only difference between the one I bought and my brother's backup charger was the year it was manufactured. His was 2007 and the new one was 2010. Other than the date on the bottom of the charger, it was exactly the same yet it charges in the older one but not the newer one. Anyone that knows why please leave a comment. I am not exactly tool savvy.
To summarize:
18V DeWalt charges in 2007 DW9116 Charger and 2010 DW9116 Charger (obviously, since it was made for it)
18V B&D PS145 Type 3 (with the notch removed) charges only in 2007 DW9116 Charger but NOT the newly ordered 2010 DW9116 Charger.
*Also note, the B&D battery fits like the Dewalt battery in the 2007 charger but is still tight in the newly ordered one. Dewalt fits the same in both chargers.
My guess, for some weird reason, is that the contacts still aren't touching in the new charger. I don't know how this is possible with what I already described. So for now we are using my brother's charger and the new one we just bought is now his backup, but if it really comes down to it, I'll probably just jury rig an extension of the charger contacts.

Best Power Failure LightWe currently have Energizer power failure lights (LED) which are not very bright and also recently junked 3 sylvania power failure/nightlights that failed to hold a charge when unplugged from the wall outlet. After reading the reviews for this product I decided to purchase them after finding them on sale at our local big-box wharehouse store.
These units are constructed very well, the flipable plug is very sturdy/tight and the unit is very thin. Aside from build quality, I was very impressed with the design that uses only (1) outlet either upper or lower. Our previous sylvania units blocked both outlets rendering them useless and we would have to physically remove the unit to access the outlets for vacuuming etc. These units only use one outlet and leave the other free which is such a great feature for those who don't have extra outlets handy.
The light output is what really impresses me...I would normally have to put more than one of the former power failure lights around the house to ensure a useful amount of emergency lighting but these units are extremely bright. I now have just one in our living room and it is bright enough to also throw light into our adjacent dining room. The other unit is upstairs in the master bedroom facing the bed so we'll most likely be awakened by the light shining at us in the event of a power failure which is fine.
For the price, these units are a great buy and although I'm not sure how long they will last, the brightness sure makes me feel secure knowing my family will never be left in the dark if the power ever fails. They also make for a handy flashlight if you needed one...great investment in your family's well being!

Glad I Went ElectricGuys, be honest with yourselves: how are you really going to use a chainsaw? If you're eyeing a high-end Husqvarna or Echo because that's what the lumberjacks and arborists use, I hear you. I love pro-grade tools, too. With chainsaws, though, you don't necessarily get what you pay for.
I've used gas chainsaws. They're great for felling, limbing and bucking whole trees in places where electricity is unavailable or inconvenient. These days, though, I use a chainsaw no more than once or twice a year, usually for some little job that's just barely beyond the capabilities of a bow saw. When those jobs come up, I can whip out my electric Poulan, finish the work, and put the saw away before you've even gotten the choke set on your gas saw.
That's not to say that this saw won't handle a big job. It will. I had a couple of huge oaks taken down last winter, and saved a bunch of money by telling the arborists to do a "cut and run" - just drop the trees, chip the small brush, and leave the big logs behind. This saw and I had no trouble limbing and bucking pieces up to two feet in diameter. Read more...
