Works great!I bought this ricer originally for making hash browns, and yes, it is the secret to crispy crunchy hash browns! It works incredibly well for mashed potatoes as well. The cushioned handle is easy on my hands and makes mashing the potatoes quick and fun. It's the one part of making dinner that everyone wants to get in on. Everyone wants to "squish" the potatoes! If you are looking for a solidly built ricer, you've found it.

The only way to make mashed potatoesFor the record, I don't like mashed potatoes - even though I wish I did. Since I am often left cooking for my friends and family, I had to learn how to make mashed potatoes that were crowd pleasers.
This tool is a tremendous help in making uniform, lump free mashed potatoes. I always think they taste like wallpaper paste, but my entire family went bonkers for the batch I made for Xmas dinner. Everyone had seconds. It was a nice feeling.
Paired this with Cook's Illustrated's master recipe for mashed potatoes, and was very happy with the results.
The only reason I didn't give it five stars is two-fold:
1) The handle is slippery when wet. This could be easily remedied by adding rubbery grips like Oxo products have.
2) This would not be a good choice for an elderly person or someone with disabilities. At 6'4" and 260lbs, I started to get pretty tired after ricing about 4lbs of potatoes.

So usefulI love this ricer. It is extremely sturdy and heavy for its size, and is just a very high-quality piece of equipment that can be used for all sorts of things -- soups, purees, spaetzle, squeezing moisture out of wilted greens, etc. I also love that it doesn't have holes on the sides. My last ricer had side holes and I was constantly squirting boiling hot potato bits all over my kitchen. This ricer really aims the riced items downward into the bowl, which I appreciate.

Pepe Likes ItThis OXO Potato Masher is something I'd been looking for over the past 10 years. When I found it, I bought it right off. It works well, except for one thing: If your cooked potatoes are not very soft, the pressure you put on the handle can actually spread outward the side rails holding the bottom face plate. It would have been a better item if the bottom masher plate had not been spot welded but rather been all one piece attached to the sides. One of my sides is actually detaching from the masher part, and I've only used it twice. Still, this concept is much better than the others.
