| It's never to late for beginners luckIt was June 2003 and I had a friend over to the house, that I had met in Payson AZ. at the Houston Mesa Horse Camp Campground in 2001. A conversation came up about applying for the Arizona Hunt Draw. Immediately my friend, Gordon Halloway's eyes lit up. "Hey" he exclaimed " Do you think a bird like me would have a chance at an elk tag?" Let's take a look at the regulations" I replied. Gordon had worked as a union electrician and a arborust when, unfortunatly he had an accident and fell out of a tree breaking his back. As a result he is permanently handicapped and has extreme limited use of his legs. We were reviewing the elk hunt options when we we came across The Champ Hunt for handicapped hunters. I recommended that he apply for this hunt. We went down to the local Arizona Game and Fish office in Flagstaff AZ. The counter staff was very helpful in supplying us with the proper information and paperwork, in order to apply for this type of hunt. Gordon promptly submitted his application to his doctor for approval at the Tucson VA hospital. His doctor gladly filled out the paperwork and encouraged him to get out and do these types of activities. This was Gordon's first attempt at an Arizona Big Game Permit, and as beginners luck would have it he was draw for the Champ Elk Hunt with only 10 permits available. Gordon celebrated his 63rd birthday at my house this summer, and he often talks excititly of this very special hunt. Gordon has a special interest in firearms history, and felt it only proper that he purchase a rifle in the historical 45-70 caliber. Gordon will HAND LOAD his Ruger #1 in an all lead 450 grain bullet, at camp, as our forefathers did in the days of the buffalo hunts. He is spending many hours at the shooting bench to make sure of his accuracy, out of respect for the animal. This will be the hunt of a lifetime for this man, and I am doing all that I can do to help insure it goes off without a hitch. I will be providing a 14 X 16 canvas wall tent to add to the comfort and authenticity of the hunt. I know that this will be a safe and sucessful hunt due to the preparation. | Must read if you go to County fairsThe format is a 11x17 newspaper. And if you want to get into showing poultry (chickens, ducks, geese, pidgons, ect.) this is a good paper to get. It is very informative, up-to-date, and readily accepts writen work from those 'out in the field'. Lots of B&W pictures of champion poultry to compair against your own. Great listings of swap meets, and judges. I have had very good results in improving my flock through the want ad's. Easy to get in contact with the owners if you have any questions.

| The Definitive Porcine News Source"Pig International" is a magazine covering all aspects of pig related news. My primary interest in the magazine is fundamentally framed by my biological education and interests, and while it suitable for scientists interested in contemporary porcine developments it is actually geared to pig farmers and the pork industry.
Each issue generally features a theme of relevance (the March 2007 issue, the latest at the time of this writing, was called "The Corn Issue," for instance.) Each issue reports on current macro-level pork market news, such as the recent national downturn in the British pork industry. All stories are well sourced and feature genuine experts: for instance the aforementioned story on the British pig downturn (written by Peter Best) interviewed Stewart Houston, the head of Britain's National Pig Association. The scope of the market analysis is very broad, and the reporting consistently well researched and clearly written. Frequent reports from important producing countries such as Denmark and Brazil give the magazine a distinctly international character.
More to my line of interests, the articles on biological factors and the veterinary care of pigs are expert and scientifically rigorous. The coverage is not limited to pigs but to relevant tangents such as herd management, breeding, feed, and antibiotic developments. Advanced techniques such as ultrasound and genetic analysis are frequently featured, and numerous academic institutions from the University of Minnesota to the University of Leipzig frequently are cited for their sophisticated studies. I have a particular interest in genetics, and the magazine covers the field of pig genetics exceptionally clearly. A typical feature is that seen in the March 2007 edition on the Meishan ("Milk from the Meishan,") a breed famous for its fertility in China, which was the subject of an investigation by Dr. Chantal Farmer from the Swine Research and Development Centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food in Lennoxville, Quebec.
In addition to the features a "Names in the News" section reads like a "Who's Who" of the pork industry, while new products and meetings like the World Pork Expo are featured in smaller columns designed to be brief and informative.
The magazine is recommended for anyone interested in the pork industry, pig biology, or farming. I awarded it four stars as it is an excellent magazine overall, though I would prefer more of an emphasis on pig biology (especially genetic, histological, and cytological studies) and less on the commercial aspects of the business; bear in mind that a pig farmer or packing house will feel conversely. Overall "Pig International" is a good compromise between the needs of biologists, veterinarians, farmers, and the commercial pork industry.
