| one of the better state magazines, well worth it for this homesick ex-midwesternerWhen I moved to New England in the fall of 2000, the one thing I asked my mother for Christmas was a subscription to "Wisconsin Trails", a magazine which my parents had been getting since it was called "Wisconsin Tales and Trails" back in the 1960s I think. The magazine has had it's ups and downs over the years; like many such publications it might seem to be getting more and more dumbed-down over the long haul, but I do think that in the last couple of years there has been something of an upswing. A recent article on farm, dairy and winery/brewery tours was pretty well-constructed and comprehensive I thought; and the magazine as ever tries to spotlight the occasional old, rundown industrial town that's trying to get back on it's feet, which I think is a nice and valuable thing to do - who needs an article on Door County, the Dells, Madison or Milwaukee every issue? Though those spots are all featured quite frequently.
Heavy on the advertising of course, as are most such publications - I get "Vermont Life" occasionally which is perhaps a little less ad-heavy but still in the same ballpark - but just about all of the ads are for homegrown businesses. Overall, it's glossy and pretty digestible, maybe even forgettable - but better than it has to be, and a standout amongst midwestern travel/tourist publications. Read more...

| A Good Magazine for a Horse Racing FanFor living in a state where finding someone who enjoys horse racing as much as I do is about as easy as trying to find a needle in a haystack. This magazine has helped me stay in touch with racing around the country. It tells me the results of each weeks races, and makes it easy to follow a horse and trainer. I have attempted to read The Thoroughbred Times on a few occassions, and perhaps its just the size of the magazine which has kept me from ever fully reading an issue. However, every issue of The Blood-Horse I can get my hands on, I have read cover to cover. Read more...
