| A winner!Odyssey Magazine-Adventures in Science is a great magazine for kids who are interested in science as well as those who might be with just a little nudge. Target audience range is for grades 4-9. As usual with Carus publications, there is no advertising other than information on how to purchase subscriptions to other Carus mags.
Odyssey boasts of an impressive list of scholars on it's advisory panel. Professors from Case Western, Harvard, Williams, and other well known institutions serve on the board.
A recent issue all about milk was well balanced and presented very divergent viewpoints. Regular feature, "Science Scoops" detailed a study that showed breast fed infants may not have an automatic advantage in IQ over their bottle fed counterparts. The latest study points out that better educated and more intelligent mothers tend to nurse their babies, and that this may account for slightly higher than average test scores. "The (Almost) Perfect Food" cites many benefits of milk and dairy in the human diet, but also mentions milk allergy and lactose intolerance. PETA's point of view is discussed as well. The activists in People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals regard confinement of dairy cows to be cruel. A 12 year old girl contributes a nice piece on robotic milking machines, and we also have the opportunity to learn about the chemical compositionof milk, mammal milk substitutes, and cheese making. A highly allergic 5th grader also shares his story on living with a milk allergy.
Another sample issue deals with Edward O. Wilson, a brilliant entomologist known as "the ant man". Wilson, a Harvard professor and prolific writer, is a believer in the importance of biodiversity. His passion for his work comes through clearly in the pages of Odyssey. Articles in this issue include, "E.O. Wilson, Boy Naturalist", Edward O. Wilson, Friend and Ant Man", "Ants Rule!", "See the World in a Tree Trunk", and more.
Regular departments appearing in each Odyssey are Activities to Discover, Science Scoops, Ask a Scientist, Brain Strain, Kids Can..., Ask Dr. Cy Borg, Star Chart, Star Gazing with Jack Horkheimer, You've Got Mail, Kids' Picks, and Animal Angles.
My kids enjoy Odyssey and I am pleased to recommend yet another top notch magazine from Carus.

| It's never to late for beginners luckIt was June 2003 and I had a friend over to the house, that I had met in Payson AZ. at the Houston Mesa Horse Camp Campground in 2001. A conversation came up about applying for the Arizona Hunt Draw. Immediately my friend, Gordon Halloway's eyes lit up. "Hey" he exclaimed " Do you think a bird like me would have a chance at an elk tag?" Let's take a look at the regulations" I replied. Gordon had worked as a union electrician and a arborust when, unfortunatly he had an accident and fell out of a tree breaking his back. As a result he is permanently handicapped and has extreme limited use of his legs. We were reviewing the elk hunt options when we we came across The Champ Hunt for handicapped hunters. I recommended that he apply for this hunt. We went down to the local Arizona Game and Fish office in Flagstaff AZ. The counter staff was very helpful in supplying us with the proper information and paperwork, in order to apply for this type of hunt. Gordon promptly submitted his application to his doctor for approval at the Tucson VA hospital. His doctor gladly filled out the paperwork and encouraged him to get out and do these types of activities. This was Gordon's first attempt at an Arizona Big Game Permit, and as beginners luck would have it he was draw for the Champ Elk Hunt with only 10 permits available. Gordon celebrated his 63rd birthday at my house this summer, and he often talks excititly of this very special hunt. Gordon has a special interest in firearms history, and felt it only proper that he purchase a rifle in the historical 45-70 caliber. Gordon will HAND LOAD his Ruger #1 in an all lead 450 grain bullet, at camp, as our forefathers did in the days of the buffalo hunts. He is spending many hours at the shooting bench to make sure of his accuracy, out of respect for the animal. This will be the hunt of a lifetime for this man, and I am doing all that I can do to help insure it goes off without a hitch. I will be providing a 14 X 16 canvas wall tent to add to the comfort and authenticity of the hunt. I know that this will be a safe and sucessful hunt due to the preparation. Special thanks to the Arizona Game and Fish for makeing this hunt possible for our handicapped citizens. For more information contact me at 928-856-0821. n Yours Truly Varn Beckham Flagstaff Arizona Read more...

| Very interesting and well-writtenThis is a great magazine whether you live in Maine or have just visited and are fond of the state. It looks at life along the coastwith a focus on boats but it's not JUST about boating. Food, houses, nature, fine art are all covered--some good recipes! The writing is really good and kind of timeless. We keep it at our summer place and guests pick up old issues and read them cover to cover--heck, we do too! Read more...

| T3 = Looks dumb but is the smartest tech mag"Wired" is another brand of this type of magazine but does not have a semi-naked woman on the cover every issue (hahaha). Basically inside T3 magazine you hope to find either one of three things.
#1 - Something so horribly expensive that you will never own it.
#2 - Something expensive that you should own.
#3 - Something that is not so expensive that you should buy that month.
For instance - 2005 is all about 'wireless' so 'Wired' magazine gets the sales, but when then the word 'Broadband' and 'T1' to 'T3' are used, we think - this... and it is all about that.
T3 is good. Get one issue and see if that is what you need. If you like to see nice takes on cool stuff, T3 does it in aces. It is not deep reading.
It is a cutting edge magazine. Let's you know the top tech devices and informs you about what is modern in technology these days. Anyway it is all about the product and I am sure T3 is more about giving you ideas that month than chasing down the top stuff through trial and error. Just try it. Read more...
