| Good Compact Magazine...Bird Watchers Digest is in my opinion a must have magazine for anyone that has any interest in birds. From the backyard feeder to the world traveler observer, BWD has enough content in all areas to satisfy anyones particular interest, on any level. There is even a regular section in each issue dedicated to back yard birding. It isn't a magazine that is at all snobby and considers back yard novices peasants. On the other hand, it is also a very technical and educational periodical for those that are advanced enough to actually take advantage of the many world wide travel suggestions and deals that are offered throughout the book. I first picked up some BWD back issues on Ebay and enjoyed it enough to order a regular subscription. I was particularly impressed by its compact size, similar to Readers Digest. It can be easily carried along in a purse or bag for traveling, and of course it makes a perfect addition to your bathroom library. The only caution that I would suggest to anyone that decides to buy a subscription is to pass on the offer of the digest newsletter that you can subscribe too for every other month that BWD isn't offered. At $16 a for 6 issues it is not worth it at all. Its a very thin, (about 10 pages) pamphlet style publication that has as many ads in it as helpful info. Its a rip off in all honesty. I let my own subscription to it lapse after the first year. You are much better off subscribing to the BWD email that is sent out periodically that is free, and loaded with article highlights and helpful info. Overall I highly recommend BWD for all bird enthusiasts on all levels. I think you will find yourself looking forward to each and every issue... Read more...

| A Benchmark to all magazinesAs I become cynical and impatient in my old age (wait! I'm only 29!) I find less and less in all of the media outlets to be intelligent or interesting. Air & Space is a shining exception to that rule. They cover the full range as I know it, from recreational to military, commercial, and space. They always have a refreshing mix of biography, technical articles, reviews of books and such, and some great photographs that make me wish the printing material were of a higher quality. | necessary reading for organic gardening / farmingAcres USA; The Voice of Eco-Agriculture
I read this monthly magazine from cover to cover every month and it is super and I can never get enough.
Different sections are as follows:
ECO-UPDATE fills a couple pages and it covers world environmental, GMO, pesticide, food recalls etc ... food news, and it is a must read. This latest addition talked about who owns the rain and water catchment laws in America, CAFO laws, GMO-Free rights and how European countries are fighting the push from large corporations like Monsanto, to use GMO seeds.
Industrial AG Watch; news from the other side of agriculture - very interesting and useful information.
Organic News: talks about political appointments, organic trends across America and the world, and other studies. There are always a couple interesting articles about organic corporations who have lied or gotten fined for not being completely organic.
Transitions; Thoughts on Organic Food and Farming
And from there the editorial staff concentrates on different issues.
There are always important and interesting articles on pasture management and heard nutrition, last month there was an interview about the dairy industry and milk prices, weeds and soil nutrition, they have a brilliant writer, Kinsey, who writes about soil and answers a question every month.
February had an extremely informative chicken issue, this September 2009 has articles on fungus and fungus treatment, being that Late Blight is a big topic this wet year in the North East.
There are articles on different livestock every month like this month they have an article on Whey-Fed Pigs, sometimes they concentrate on certain heirloom breeds or common farm breeds.
Many of the articles are written by different farmers who have made detailed studies and they are very hands-on and helpful even though many of these farmers are not in the North East, but in Missouri and other big farming areas the information I still find pertinent.
Other good sections are the Eco-Gardener, The Harvest table; honoring food from farm to fork - this month talking about making your own butter, The Natural Vet, Health & Healing - this month is about genetically engineered crops being in our food chain, and Health & Healing News updates studies like a Folate vs Cancer study, Books and Information, The Last Word, View from the Country and the Classifieds.
This is a terrific magazine if you are interested in gardening, farming, self sustainability, animal husbandry and organic living.
October 2009 update: I'm still loving Acres and reading 99% of each monthly magazine - really my most fav read! Read more...

| One of the bestIn our slick and dumbed down society Invention & Technology is one of the few bright spots for the few that know about it.
Summer 2007 was the last time it was issued, HOWEVER American Heritage has found a new publisher. This means AH's parent company Forbes, Inc has sold it I guess? On the phone with AH I was told they plan to start up publication again this summer, of 2008. I just hope the unique spartan 'no fuss' retro pre-60's format will not be changed too much, additionally with the continuation of no advertisements. The extensive research that goes into each expertly written article along with the 'really cool' historical photos is much appreciated by the magazine's fans. Read more...

| Has you thinkingI've been reading Skeptic for about 5 years now and really enjoy this periodical. While some of the topics are classic (e.g. evolution versus ID), it also introduces new ideas which keep it fresh. Skeptic covers a broad degree of questionable claims and the different authors certainly have their own style of writing making it a entertaining reading experience.
Things that could be improved are the fact some of the articles are difficult to follow or harp on and on regarding some minor stance. Also, occasionally the articles are written in a very patronizing or one-sided style which as an educated audience I find annoying.
However, there is plenty of content so I'm still getting my moneys worth when I skip the tedious articles and read the ones I'm interested in. Read more...
