| Great magazine for writersThis is a wonderful magazine. It has advice for writers of both fiction and non-fiction, articles on how to improve your writing, tips on publishing, and other insight into the world of writing.
Good magazine, but...Like most magazines, Writer's Digest is hit and miss, depending on where you are as a writer and what kind of writing you do. Some articles speak to you, while others will appeal to writers in very different situations from your own. But even still, it's useful to get a glimpse into the other areas of the business of writing that I'm not quite ready for.
This magazine is geared toward writers in general, but skews toward adult writers. As a writer of Young Adult and Middle Grade books, there's still plenty for me in this magazine because for the most part, writing is writing. But a little more focus on the one area of publishing that hasn't faltered in this tough economy (i.e. children's books) would be nice.
My only complaint is one I've had with other magazines: When my subscription starts, please don't send me this month's and last month's issues at the same time!!! I'm sure this saves the magazine money since they can unload the unsold issues from last month and count it toward my 8 issues, but part of the fun of getting a magazine delivered to your house is that you get to look forward to a new one every month for a year (although with WD, it's only 8 issues in 12 months, so not even every month with this one). Even worse, I had both the September and October issues arrive on the same day! So I guess I'll only get 11 months worth of service, even though their sending me a years worth of issues. And for that, I'm withholding a star.
UPDATE: 3 Days later I received the November/December issue!!! So my first three issues (two of which are obviously the back issues they're trying to unload) arrived in less than a week and almost half of my 8-issue subscription is spent. That's just ridiculous. If it would let me change my rating, I'd take it down to 3 stars, but apparently I'm locked in at 4.
Just started my subscription again, and I'm gladI just started to subscribe to Writer's Digest again after a few years of letting my subscription lapse. I'm glad I did. Although there are a lot of advertisements and some of the ads are for some pretty bad vanity presses, I understand that magazines need ad revenue to stay in business. I get it.
The magazine is really targeted towards traditional publishing, but even self-published authors (like me) can learn something here. And some of the interviews are really great, even if just to gape at how some lucky authors get to live.
The first issue I received was the August 2009 issue, and it had a pretty good "Publishing Survival Guide" in it. The interview was with Anne Tyler, and that alone was worth the price of the magazine. There's also a good interview with Rick Steves (I'm a huge fan). Interestingly, though, they decided to put Anne Tyler on the cover instead of Rick Steves. I thought that Rick would have been a better cover than Anne Tyler from a marketing standpoint.
Anyway, the ads are a bother but the magazine is still worth it.
Recommended.
Excellent resource for writers - especially when starting writing career.I recommend Writer's Digest most highly! It has been a major help for me in pointing out grammar and style issues and illustrating the way to correct these problems. Writer's Digest is also an invaluable resource in finding businessses and services for writers. Because of this, I am now on my way to being published for the very first time.
magazineThis came in the promised time period. However I had ordered it as a gift subscription. It was being delivered to me not the intended. Can when ordering gift subscriptions, a way that the magazine will get sent to the right address from the start. Can that part of the ordering process be made simpler & clearer? This happened on two magazines. The isusse is now corrected, but it took a couple issues to change.
