Works, simply

I have used previous Brita pitchers and they have a lifespan of a little over a year. Still, this is better than any faucet attached filter I have used (Pur and Brita). Spending ~$30/year for a pitcher and filters is a better deal than a $100+ faulty faucet mount and filters.

Good little system

I work for a national laboratory that is even known worldwide. The lab that I work for orders bottle water for those employees that do not want to drink water from the water fountains. In some areas we have reverse osmosis systems. Our company bend over backwards to accommodate and protect us.

Some of us got together and decided that we would test Brita and Pur water pitchers (we did this for four months) since we use them at home. We also tested various bottle waters. The test we did utilize ICP, ICP/MS, GC, GC/MS, and various other methods (e.g. coliform). We found that these pitchers were comparable. They did what they claim they would do. Nothing in 100% and with the consideration of hygienic techniques you could stay within the error of the company's claim.

Keep in mind that we are a laboratory and that we are very concerned with contamination and cross contamination. With that being said we are a lot more careful with our water samples. You should wash your pitcher regularly. Change your filter like the company recommend. Anything in your fridge will grow mold. Keep in mind that you are constantly handling your pitcher (not everyone is washing their hands when they use their pitcher all the time) and taking it in and out of the fridge. Any of these things will cause bacteria and mold to grow.

I am saying all of this so that people will think before they trash something that they may have contributed to its failure.

You don't want to know how the bottled water faired.

Gets the job done

Water tastes better. Little charcoal bits do escape from filter, but it stays contained in top part. I have to fill up my pitcher often, but I don't have much room in my kitchen for a bigger one.

Good Pitcher

This pitcher is definitely an improvement over the older model I had. I've had it for a little over a year now and it has been well worth the money. It's easy to clean, easy to fill, and holds a fair amount of water. If you're a heavy water drinker I'd recommend one of the bigger containers so you don't have to constantly fill it. We fill it each time we take water from it, so we're usually never without cold water. Using this pitcher with a reusable water bottle such as a Klean Kanteen or a Sigg will really cut the expense and waste of buying bottled water. And, if you're into recycling, you can drop the used filters off at Whole Foods, or if you don't have a Whole Foods in your town, you can mail the filters back for recycling. The only downside to this pitcher is that it does not have an airtight seal. This normally isn't a problem, as the lid protects from flavors and odors in the fridge, but sometimes I'll forget to wrap something good and my water will taste like the food product. Not a huge deal, but something to consider.

I love it!

I love the sleek, slim design and it filters the water beautifully. We have very hard well water, and when I make tea with milk the inside of the cup gets covered with a scummy film. When I used the filtered water, I noticed immediately that the tea looked clear and beautiful in the cup--no film at all, even after the milk is added! I find the lid fits snugly (although I did have to put in on carefully to make sure it sealed all around) and one can pour the filtered water out with no unwanted spillage even if there is still water in the reservoir . The spout is shaped well and I love how the little spout lid comes up automatically when pouring, and I like that one can fill tap water in without having the take the lid off. My advice to those who are concerned that it takes long to fill/cool is to replace each glass of water as you use it. There should be enough cold water left to make subsequent glasses cold enough and the small amount the temperature is raised will be reduced quickly again. (Of course, this doesn't work if you're using the whole pitcher at once; in that case, a separate bottle or carafe is a good idea.) For those who are afraid the lid will come off while pouring (or maybe that was a complaint about other models), mine came packaged with the lid held on with one of those clingy pieces of plastic, the same material they give you for the replacement reminder calendar or that colorforms are made of. I put that over the lid and an inch or so down each side. You can't really see it, and although I'm not sure it's necessary it does guarantee that the lid stays on.

Amazon.com Review

This pitcher combines Brita's reliable filtering with a very convenient narrow shape and flip-top lid for easy refills. To operate, simply flip the lid and fill the water reservoir, then wait a couple of minutes for it to filter through. The filter used with this system has been certified by NSF International, a testing authority for water filtration products, and reduces copper and eliminates 99% of lead in tap water. Using activated carbon as well as an ion exchange resin, it also reduces chlorine, bad tastes, odors, and sediment--making it a lot easier to drinkthe recommended eight glasses of water a day. It comes with one filter, lasting approximately two months, and the pitcher is clear with a white top. --Maria Dolan
